Lancers honour top student-athletes

Pierce Johnson of men’s volleyball claimed his second straight Olympic Shield and golfer Alyssa Getty won the Banner Shield as the University of Windsor Athletes of the Year, the Lancers announced Wednesday.

Johnson was an all-Canadian and player of the year in Ontario University Athletics’ west division on the strength of 196 kills, 76 digs, and 35 blocks to earn 239 points.

Getty is just the second Lancer ever to win the Judy McCrae Trophy as OUA champion in women’s golf. In her first appearance in the provincial tournament, she shot a two-day total of 154 and led all golfers with six birdies, while making par on 17 holes.

Johnson’s teammate Brad Gyemi and Kaylee Anagnostopoulos of women’s basketball won the DeMarco Awards for best combining academic and athletic achievement.

Track and field standout Mandy Brunet and Thomas Kennedy from men’s basketball received super sophomore awards, while rookie of the year honours went to Yaila Sealy of women’s volleyball, Shakael Pryce of men’s basketball, and Anthony Salinitri of men’s hockey.
