Tolulope Ajayi, Harnoor Singh Reen, Lara Belton, and Mamata Bashar of the International Student Centre handed out welcoming gifts of swag and local produce to new arrivals Tuesday and Wednesday in Vanier Hall.
International students recently arrived in Canada got a unique welcome to Windsor-Essex this week with a gift of swag that included meal kits with fresh produce grown right here.
“I will definitely make use of this!” said Jatan Desai, a Master of Management major from India, who received a bundle in a giveaway Tuesday organized by the International Student Centre.
Reusable shopping bags were filled with sweet peppers, tomatoes, pasta, and seasoning to make several meals, donated by Kingsville-based Sunset Produce. The ISC handed out draw string bags containing a Windsor Proud T-shirt and promotional items like water bottles, notebooks, and snacks.
Sunset’s marketing co-ordinator, Jenny Arias, said the company is “on a mission” to inspire healthy living through better food.
“Flavour brings people together and we are happy to provide this positive experience while supporting our local community,” she said.
ISC director Beth Oakley said the event marks a step towards a return to normal.
“We at the centre are excited to be able to resume some in-person events for our students and will continue to look for opportunities to connect in person and virtually,” said Oakley.
The International Student Centre has re-opened its doors in Laurier Hall to visits on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays. Its Soft Landing program helps students get settled in their new home. The centre also makes study space available for booking through mySuccess, and offers advising, currently online only.
