Message shares tips to ease sinus infections

Sinus infections often follow a cold and cause pain and pressure in the head and face.

In a message sent Monday to UWindsor faculty and staff, Human Resources shared some tips to help reduce stuffiness in your sinuses:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to thin the mucus.
  • Apply a hot, damp towel on your face for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, several times a day to help soothe sinus pain and to help clear the nasal passages.
  • Expose your sinuses to warm, moist air (for example from a steamy shower, a hot bath, or by leaning over a bowl or sink filled with hot water).
  • Use saline nose drops and sprays to keep the nasal passages moist and use saline nasal washes to help keep the nasal passages open and wash out mucus and bacteria.
  • Use a humidifier at night to help relieve nighttime nasal blockages.

While most sinus infections could be treated with self-care measures, you should see a medical practitioner if the symptoms are severe, prolonged or repeated.
