Director of Anti-racism Organizational Change announced

The University is pleased to announce the reorganization of the position of Strategic Planning Officer for Anti-Black Racism Initiatives with the appointment of Marium Tolson-Murtty as Director of Anti-racism Organizational Change (AROC). This expanded role builds on our significant efforts on Anti-Black Racism and responds to our commitment to address all forms of racism and racial discrimination on our campus.  

Reporting to the Vice-President, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the Director, AROC will: 

  1. Support effective program and policy development and delivery related to Anti-Racism  
  2. Provide advice, analysis, and guidance on anti-racism policy and efforts at the University of Windsor 
  3. lead institutional initiatives for concrete actions to enact and monitor positive change regarding systemic and institutional racism  
  4. Plan and lead implementation of Anti-Racism initiatives  
  5. Serve as an institutional champion for this critically important work  
  6. work with staff, faculty, students, and members of the community, in awareness-raising, policy development, and institutional and educational initiatives across the Institution. 
  7. Play a key role in public and institutional communications related to Anti-Racism efforts on campus.  

Marium is eminently qualified for this important role. A three-time graduate of The University of Windsor, she has spent the last year as Strategic Planning Officer for Anti-Black Racism Initiatives at the University of Windsor highlighted by her leadership of the Anti-Black Racism Taskforce and the implementation of several scholarship programs for Black students and research and teaching grants for faculty and graduate students. Her graduate and current PhD research explore historical and contemporary challenges faced by Black and racialized youth across all stages of their education. 

Her activism and advocacy as a racial justice champion in the community are long and distinguished.  

This work includes: 

  • President of the Hour-A-Day Study Club (HADSC). Now in its 87th year, the HADSC is the oldest African Canadian women’s organization and aside from social justice and advocacy, provides scholarship funds for students who are descendants of the Underground Railroad 
  • The Black Council of Windsor-Essex Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee Chairperson 
  • Board member for the United Way-Windsor/Essex where she sits on the inaugural Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging committee as well as serves as a member of Women United 
  • Founder of a new post-secondary education mentoring program called PROPEL (Preparing for the Realities of Post-Secondary Education and Life)   
  • Chartered member of Black Boys Code – Windsor 
  • Member of DWIS (Distinguished Women of International Service)
  • Coalition for Justice Unity and Equity (CJUE) & 2020 Black History Month wall of fame recipient
