Minister Joe Oliver, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced Friday the Canadian government's investment in Carleton University to create internship opportunities and fellowships for graduates and graduate students in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. This investment will also benefit businesses across southern Ontario.
Students in Amr ElRagaby’s graduate course in bridge engineering really dug deep Thursday, as guest lecturer Biljana Rajlic discussed her work as the lead structural engineer and design team project manager of the Right Honourable Herb Gray Parkway.
The 11-kilometre, $1.4 billion project will connect Highway 401 to Interstate 75 in Michigan via a new bridge across the Detroit River.
Rajlic discussed the parkway’s design challenges, providing an overview of the roadways, utilities, geotechnical, structural, traffic management, landscaping and environmental design.
She gets a lot of feedback from students about being approachable, says Christine Rossi, and it makes her feel her work as a teaching assistant is worthwhile.

An international student herself, Hua Meng says she was amazed to see the ethnic diversity on the UWindsor campus. A teaching assistant in economics, the master’s candidate says she hopes to set an example.

Business student Jennifer Seedu says she isn’t sure what she wants to do once she completes her BComm, but she appreciates the experience she is gaining as a teaching assistant in marketing and management courses.
A new web site that showcases the breadth and variety of opportunities available for students to do research here should spark an interest among undergrads considering the possibility of graduate studies, according to Patricia Weir.
“I hope it will motivate them to believe they can be a part of this amazing process of becoming a graduate student,” said Dr. Weir, Dean of Graduate Studies.
Working as a graduate assistant has provided invaluable experience toward her career aspirations in law, says Mary Girges.

The Graduate Studies Showcase, Wednesday in the CAW Student Centre Commons, is structured to provide a range of perspectives. Faculty members and current students will be on hand to answer questions about admissions, research, scholarships and other funding, program requirements and future job opportunities.
Each of the University’s master’s and doctoral programs will be represented at the event, which runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
