Information fair to showcase UWindsor graduate programs

The Faculty of Graduate Studies will host the University of Windsor Graduate Studies Showcase on Wednesday, November 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Commons area of the CAW Student Centre.

Each graduate program will have representatives available to answer questions about admissions, research, scholarships, opportunities for graduate/teaching/research assistantships and other funding, program requirements and future job opportunities.

UWindsor social work grad honoured with scholarship award

The Athena Scholarship embodies the values of her chosen profession, says social worker Marianne Stoesser.

“It strives for the empowerment of people to develop to their full potential and become agents for positive change in the lives of individuals, families and the community,” says Stoesser (MSW 2012), who will receive the award at a luncheon Friday hosted by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The award carries a cash value of $3,000 and recognizes community involvement, potential for leadership, demonstrated excellence and academic standing.

Student artwork to provide context for discussion of economic issues

An exhibition of installation and video work by MFA candidate Michael Dirisio will provide context for a discussion of financial precarity and alternative economies, Thursday, November 2, in the main gallery of Mackenzie Hall.

“The event will address the role that political art can play in engaging with the city and with each other, and how it can prompt a reconsideration of social norms and conventions,” says Dirisio.

Continuing Education Fair helps students discover possibilities

As Rita Jabbour understands it, it’s a simple formula.

“The more school you have, the more money you make over time,” said the fourth-year history major, one of hundreds of UWindsor students touring the Continuing Education Fair in the CAW Student Centre on Tuesday.

She spoke with Chris Young, program administrator for the Odette MBA, about pursuing graduate study in business.

“It would let me take what I have learned in history and apply it to help society,” Jabbour said.

Fair to showcase opportunities for continuing education

The Centre for Career Education, in partnership with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, presents the seventh annual Continuing Education Fair on Tuesday, October 23.

More than 40 exhibitors from educational institutions will showcase their graduate and post-graduate programs to University of Windsor students. This year, the fair will spread across two locations in the CAW Student Centre, with exhibitors in the Commons area as well as in Ambassador Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gold medallist author of her own good fortune

In recommending Kate Hargreaves for the Governor General's Gold Medal, the department of English Language, Literature and Creative Writing described the two-time grad (BA 2010, MA 2012) as “the most talented and hard-working student we have had the pleasure to teach and mentor.”

Hargreaves received the medal as the top graduate student in her cohort at Saturday’s Convocation ceremonies.

Kinesiology student goes from researching Olympics to attending them

Katrina Krawec went from conducting Olympic-related research in Germany this summer to actually attending the Games in London.

A master’s student in kinesiology, Krawec spent several months at the University of Tübingen, just south of Stuttgart, where she participated in a large multi-year study to analyze the health and nutrition behaviours in adolescent Olympic-level elite athletes.

Contest winner assures quality of responses

Erica Lyons, coordinator of the institutional quality assurance process in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, won yesterday’s DailyNews trivia contest and the prize package of UWindsor-themed swag.

Her name was drawn from all respondents who correctly identified the chart-toppers for each of these acts: My Ding-a-Ling for Chuck Berry, A Boy Named Sue for Johnny Cash, and One Week for the Barenaked Ladies. Several contestants appeared tripped up by the quizmaster’s specification of the Billboard Hot 100 rather than country or R&B charts.

Local gallery to exhibit works by MFA student

A free public reception on Friday, September 7, will celebrate the opening of visual arts student Mike Marcon’s exhibition “Inland Empires” at Artcite, the artist-run centre for contemporary art.

Marcon’s mixed-media installations explore themes related to Canadian identity. Found objects, images and sculpture act as a catalyst for the displacement of symbols and myths that continue to inform the “official” national identity.
