Video records Lancers’ homecoming

A video by Chris Kolonelos of the Centre for Teaching and Learning captured the scene last week, when the Lancer women’s basketball team returned from Regina as three-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions.

“We’re with family right now,” head coach Chantal Vallée told dozens of supporters who welcomed the team as members entered the St. Denis Centre.

Faculty of Nursing charting course to 2017

A new strategic plan for the Faculty of Nursing provides a roadmap to the future, says dean Linda Patrick. She unveiled the document, a six-panel brochure, at a celebratory reception Thursday in Vanier Hall.

UWindsor president Alan Wildeman praised the faculty for setting forth an attainable vision.

“I like the fact that this plan is short,” he told professors and staff. “If it’s not concise, it gets into levels of detail that no one can remember.”

Film focuses on young web entrepreneurs

The Centre for Enterprise and Law is hosting a screening of the documentary The Startup Kids, Monday, March 25.

Filmmakers Vala Halldorsdottir and Sesselja Vilhjalmsdottir present interviews with a number of young entrepreneurs—including the founders of Vimeo, Soundcloud, Kiip, InDinero, Dropbox and Foodspotting—in an effort to inspire other young people to start their own companies.

Seminar to engage social workers in critical thinking

A seminar next month promises professional development for practising social workers and students of the profession, as Community Partners for Applied Research and Consultation presents “Social Work: What have we done to ourselves?” Wednesday, April 17.

Brent Angell, director of the UWindsor School of Social Work, will act as host for the event, which runs 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Caboto Club, 2175 Parent Avenue.

HK student tried out for Toronto Triumph for research purposes

Katrina Krawec knows what it means to go the extra yard for the sake of her research.

A graduate student in the university’s kinesiology department, she’s studying the differences between two Canadian women’s tackle football leagues – one which requires its players to wear full uniforms, the other in which they play in bikinis.

Last year, she actually tried out for the Toronto Triumph, one of four Canadian teams in what until recently was known as the Lingerie Football League.

Industry connects with research in CEI

More than 100 people met yesterday in the industrial courtyard at the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering to learn more about how local businesses can connect with university researchers to help make them more competitive.

“I’m really impressed with the depth of knowledge and the opportunity for potential partnerships,” said Kevin O’Connor, a software development manager at Vista Print, one of 34 local companies registered for the event.

Luncheon fêtes 2013 graduates of Outstanding Scholars program

The Outstanding Scholars program made Nathalie Hinchey an offer she couldn’t refuse.

The Hamilton native had considered studying at another university, but the combination of financial incentives and the chance to engage in research was too good to pass up. The mathematics students was part of this year’s class of graduating Outstanding Scholars honoured with a luncheon reception Wednesday.

Cupcakes capture attention of campus community

A cupcake giveaway Wednesday in the CAW Student Centre served its purpose of bringing attention to the University’s 50th anniversary, organizers say.

“We had a really nice turnout,” says chief communications officer Holly Ward. “It is important for us to make sure the campus community is aware of what we’re doing. We will be launching advertising soon, but the current students and employees are really a core part of the celebration.”
