Day to celebrate the kindness of strangers – and friends

Where’s Winston? You won’t have to wonder today, as the Lancer mascot will post regular updates of his whereabouts on the University’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

He has signed up to join the Kindness Krew as it journeys around campus to perform random acts of kindness for students, faculty, staff and visitors. If you spot Winston, be sure to ask him for a favour!

Pledge drive invites listeners to give the gift of radio

Campus-community radio station CJAMfm will launch its annual pledge drive today, and station manager Adam Fox says it relies on donations to sustain its operations.

“CJAM needs listener support to help cover the basic day-to-day costs of radio,” Fox says. “Pledge donations represent roughly 20 percent of our annual operating revenues.”

Writer to answer questions from campus community

Playwright, novelist, social activist and documentary filmmaker Drew Hayden Taylor will hold a question-and-answer session in the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre’s Studio Theatre at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 4.

Admission is free and open to the campus community. His appearance sponsored by the School of Dramatic Art was organized by its director, Lionel Walsh, and facilitated by Taylor’s commitment to Bookfest Windsor.

Touring bear rolls through Windsor

With 10 provinces to visit since May 1, it has been a long six months for Ursula, but Windsor marked the end of the road.

The polar bear has been touring Canada’s universities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, and this week was UWindsor’s turn.

During her time in town, Ursula visited some of the campus hotspots, hung out with some students, and even took advantage of the University’s proximity to Detroit to do a little cross-border sightseeing.

UWindsor research projects draw support from cancer centre foundation

Three research projects involving a total of eight researchers from the University of Windsor, Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, Windsor Regional Hospital, and McGill University will share a total of $206,000 in funding from the Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation.

The grants are made under the 2011 Seeds4Hope program, which supports innovative local cancer research.

The foundation’s president, Norma Brockenshire, said she was proud to support the work of the medical and research community.

Recital a showcase for student talents

The School of Music’s Take 4 series of student recitals will showcase performances by six students in the Music Building’s Recital Hall, Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Basketball coach featured speaker at Chamber of Commerce scholarship luncheon

Chantal Vallée, head coach of the national champion Lancers women’s basketball team, will discuss how she built a winning program and developed the character of her players in a presentation entitled “Lead to Succeed On and Off the Court” today during the 12th annual Athena Scholarship Luncheon.

The event, sponsored by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, will honour the three 2011 recipients of the Athena Scholarship:

Promotion has Food Services giving away an Apple a day

This week, Food Services is giving away an apple a day – a 16-GB Apple iPod Nano, that is.

Customers who purchase a meal and a Coca-Cola product will receive a ballot to enter a draw for one of five of the digital music players.

The contest opened October 31 and runs through November 4 at Café Chez Vanier, the Crocodile Grill, the Marketplace food court, Dividends, the Gavel, and the Bru locations in Alumni Hall and the Toldo Health Education Centre.
