Awards ceremony celebrates history department achievements

An awards ceremony Thursday celebrated the achievements of students and faculty in the Department of History. The event was held in a first-year class taught by professor Rob Nelson, said department head Miriam Wright.

“It was an occasion for us to let our new students know about the quality of a degree in history from the University of Windsor,” she said. “Our faculty are talented, highly-respected scholars who have works published by the world’s top academic presses and journals.”

Hoopnotica offers an alternative cardio workout

Who says hula hoops are a thing of the past? Not Kathy Bellamy, who runs Hoopnotica classes for Campus Recreation.

“Hoopnotica is a fun fitness alternative,” Bellamy says. “Hula hooping will strengthen and tone your abdominal muscles, strengthen and mobilize your lower back and hips. Because you are engaging and using so many different muscle groups at the same time you also have the benefit of burning far more calories than you would with just simple sit-ups or crunches.”

She says making it part of your fitness routine will also improve your posture, balance and agility.

It’s in you to give: blood donor clinic on campus Tuesday

A single donation of blood can save up to three lives. Tuesday is your chance to be a lifesaver, as the Canadian Blood Service will hold a full blood donor clinic in the CAW Student Centre's Ambassador Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For this clinic, the Canadian Blood Service will use its appointment system. It encourages donors to book appointments by calling 1-888-2DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Walk-in donors are still welcome but appointments will better accommodate donors' working schedules.

It will deliver the existing programs in the two disciplines and will introduce new programs in film production, sound, interdisciplinary arts, and an option for students to design their own interdisciplinary degrees.

Business students gets hands-on promotional experience with WIFF

Business student Dane Rife had a big problem. Tasked with promoting the Windsor International Film Festival to his fellow students, he was struggling with how to get around a rule that dictates posters can not be hung on the walls of the Odette Building.

The creative solution he proposed to his team: building their own wall.

“We went to Home Depot, got all the supplies, and put it together right there on the front lawn of Odette,” the fourth-year student said. “We had to do it fast because we didn’t know if we’d be allowed.”

The Office of Human Resources has made a provision for non-essential university employees to attend the ceremony, which will last until approximately 11:15 a.m. In particular, anyone on campus who has served in the military is especially welcome to attend.

Students holding pasta dinner to support United Way

Business students are trained to conduct market research, determine what is missing and fill those needs. According to Hasitha Sridharan, a student at the Odette School of Business, the United Way operates in much the same fashion.

“It sees what the community needs and then works to fill the gaps in support systems,” she said.

Sridharan and her classmates in organizational behaviour are holding a pasta dinner next week to raise funds for United Way. She has worked with the charity in the past and appreciates its role.
