Feminist author and social activist bell hooks once said that she entered the classroom with the conviction that it was crucial for her and every other student to be an active participant, and not just a passive consumer of education.
That’s a sentiment that must certainly resonate with Jamie Sewell, who is studying the author’s works as part of her master’s thesis is philosophy.
Chelsea Alexander was only 15 when she had her first brush with real architecture. Her father was building a new home in Toronto’s Yonge and Eglington neighbourhood, and gave her the chance for some input on the plans, soliciting her opinion on the location of a bathroom and some of the bedrooms.
“I was so excited,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in art, and I had been drawing floor plans ever since I was a little kid, so I was thrilled for the opportunity.”

Organizers call the Three Minute Thesis competition a unique opportunity to promote the innovative research undertaken by graduate students at the University of Windsor. The heats and the final are open to the public and will be advertised within the community. The audience will be able to cast a vote for a People’s Choice award in the final.
The Ontario government has extended the 2012/13 deadline for students to apply for the 30 per cent off tuition grant until March 1.
Students who meet the requirements may be eligible for a grant covering 30 per cent of their tuition costs. Those who have applied for the Ontario Student Assistance Program are automatically considered, but all others must complete an application.
