September weekend to kick off University’s 50th anniversary celebrations

From September 2013 until April 2014, the University of Windsor will commemorate five decades of education, creativity, and innovation—and it is inviting you to join the celebration.

Up to 20,000 alumni, friends and community members are expected to visit the campus for a kick-off weekend September 19 to 22, designed to strengthen Lancer pride and show our appreciation for the continued support of our region.

New flumes give grad students cutting edge technology for studying water flow

Minimizing the impact of tsunamis on coastal regions and building sturdier bridges are just two of the outcomes a group of graduate student researchers are aiming for now that they have some top-notch new equipment up and running in the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation.

“It’s really cutting edge,” PhD student Vimaldoss Jesudhas says of the giant flume he works with, one of two of its kind in the new engineering building.

CJAM's Strummer tribute raises $700 for youth homeless centre

It may not sound like a princely sum to most, but $700 goes a long way at the Windsor Youth Centre.

That's how much CJAM volunteers and staffers raised last December 22 when they held their annual Joe Strummer Day—held on the anniversary of the death of the former front man of the punk band the Clash—to raise funds and awareness about poverty and homelessness issues in the university campus radio station's listening area of Windsor and Detroit.

Discussion of Roman gladiators to open classics conference

A keynote address entitled “Investing in Death: Gladiators as Investment and Currency in the Late Republic” will open the eighth annual University of Windsor Undergraduate Classics Conference, Friday, March 1, at 4 p.m. in Alumni Hall’s McPherson Lounge.

The public is invited to the free lecture, by York University history professor Jonathan Edmondson.

Children of Arab immigrants caught between two worlds, PhD student finds

Ashley Paterson clearly remembers the first day of one of her classes when all of the students had to say a little about themselves. A boy in the class introduced himself, noted that he was from the Middle East, and added the caveat “And I’m not a terrorist.”

“That’s an example that really highlights the importance of identity,” said Paterson, a PhD student in psychology. “You could see how he was struggling with his cultural identity in a society that so often discriminates against people.”

Awards ceremony to acknowledge top researchers

Some of the university’s top scholars and researchers will be acknowledged at a special ceremony tomorrow afternoon.

The 2012 Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Ambassador Auditorium in the CAW Student Centre. The campus community is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

One-day sale to offer savings on faculty-themed sweatshirts

The University Bookstore is offering a 10 per cent discount on all sweatshirts emblazoned with program and faculty names today—Tuesday, February 26—at its kiosk in the CAW Student Centre.

“The Faculty Sweatshirts are our most popular item of clothing, but we’ve noticed that some students don’t seem to have one,” says marketing manager Martin Deck. “So we thought we’d offer a discount for one day only to see if we can fix that!”
