Some people who travel through the Canadian prairies may describe their spaces as mundane, but to a young camera man with a vivid imagination and a desire for visual stimulation, the wide open west provides a bounty of opportunity.
Communications student Liam McWade is hoping to inflate some numbers this summer.
As volunteer coordinator for Balloonapalooza, he is seeking to recruit people to help mount the festival, now in its second year. McWade describes the event as kaleidoscope of colour, boasting more than 80 cold-air balloons through Windsor’s downtown core as well as entertainment for people of all ages.
Volunteering on projects to help those less fortunate really make him realize how fortunate he is, says Chris Woodrow. The UWindsor communications grad (BA 1981) will serve as president of the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair for the 2012-13 year.
A Rotarian since 2007, Woodrow has been actively involved in many facets of club operations, notably the TV Auction Committee where he served as chair for two successful years, the club public relations committee, RELAY and many other club activities. The club named him its Rotarian of the year in 2009.
UWindsor alumnus Rick Spence (BA communications, 1977) will kick off Startup Canada’s visit to Windsor-Essex with a keynote address this morning at the Odette School of Business.

Preliminary renderings of the University of Windsor’s downtown campus were revealed by president Alan Wildeman during a media conference Wednesday, April 17, in the Windsor Armouries.
“The University of Windsor is creating new spaces where our students, faculty and staff can be engaged in innovative teaching, learning and discovery, and where they can more effectively partner with the arts community and social agencies to make a difference,” Dr. Wildeman said.
A film to be screened on campus Thursday tells the story of political activists who cross the line into law-breaking and authorities who may be crossing their own lines to catch them.
It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. With that can-do attitude, members of the Sigma Chi fraternity dove right into a charitable endeavour last week – soaking in a hot tub outside the CAW Student Centre to raise funds for the fight against ovarian cancer.
“One of our sorority sisters has ovarian cancer, so we want to support research for a cure,” said second-year communications student Josh Harendorf.
A film by a UWindsor English grad will enjoy its premiere Thursday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. in room 121, Biology Building.
Matt St. Amand (BA 1995, MA 2000) wrote Call In, which he describes as a short “found footage” film that traces the disappearance of Steve Shell, the host of a conspiracy call-in radio show who walked out during a 2011 broadcast and hasn't been seen or heard from since.
“The film is somewhat experimental,” says St. Amand. “It's a radio play set to images shot around the city of Windsor.”
Cinema Politica will host a series of film screenings this semester, presenting works that feature under-represented characters and tell stories which challenge conventional fiction and documentary narratives.
Admission is by donation; all screenings take place at 7 p.m. Thursdays in room 108, Odette Building.
Marshall McLuhan might be considered by many as one of the prominent modern Canadian intellectuals, but he was actually heavily influenced by a lesser-known Swiss art historian and architectural critic, according to a visual 
arts professor who will lecture on the subject today.
