High schoolers well-versed in brain knowledge were on campus March 28 as the Faculty of Science hosted its fifth annual Windsor Brain Bee competition.

Twenty-four students competed in the event, battling it out over hot brain topics such as stress, neurotransmitters and brain disease.

Hailing from grades 11 and 12, the top three competitors received entrance scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to study the program of their choice in the Faculty of Science at the University of Windsor.

From crime prediction to women’s health: Students demo real-world tech solutions

Eager students lined the aisles at the Advanced Computing Hub, the School of Computer Science’s downtown campus, ready to pitch their programming projects to staff, faculty and industry partners.

Undergrads, computer science graduate students and Master of Applied Computing (MAC) students showed off their CS Demo Day Winter 2025 pitches ranging from detecting sign language to agri-tech, and from crime prediction to education-focused platforms aimed at supporting student learning.

Alumna helps drive startup success in automotive innovation

Alumna Mackenzie Habash (BSc. Hons 2021) credits the critical thinking skills she gained as an economics major for her career success.

“I found my honours economics degree was a great catalyst to look at a problem wholistically to try and solve it,” says Habash.

“It gave me the skills to have good financial acumen to look at a problem and be able to come up with a multitude of solutions – whether it be technical or business solutions.”

Partnership to fuel tech park with top student talent

A partnership between the University of Windsor and the Kanata North Business Association and Hub350, Canada’s largest tech hub, will help bridge the industry talent gap, foster innovation, and connect students with more than 500 companies in the technology sector, says Judy Bornais, executive director of the Office of Experiential Learning.

“Partnering with the KNBA and Hub350 is a tremendous opportunity for us to help fuel the tech park with the best and brightest student talent from the University of Windsor,” she says.

Provost names acting dean of science

Provost Patti Weir has named Dr. Dora Cavallo-Medved Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science. The appointment was made in consultation with the Faculty of Science Assembly and is effective September 1, 2022.  

Dr. Cavallo-Medved has played a key role in student recruitment, student-faculty partnerships and leadership development. With Dr. Cavallo-Medved’s strong background in teaching and research, she is well positioned to take up this role as the Faculty of Science welcomes students back to campus in Fall 2022 and the new recruitment cycle begins for Fall 2023.
