Students and faculty from the School of Computer Science will be among those celebrating National Science and Technology Week at a Robotics Open House at the Windsor Public Library’s central branch on Thursday, October 11.
“We will be displaying a number of robots, including the new Turtlebot, football-playing Lego NXTs and a robot that can solve Rubik’s cube,” says professor Ziad Kobti, director of the School of Computer Science.
Given that Gurupdesh Pandher knows a thing or two about sharing good ideas, it might be reasonable to expect that there should be some choice new ones coming out of the Odette School of Business in the not-so-distant future.
The faculty's new senior associate dean, academic, Dr. Pandher has spent a fair portion of his research time focusing on why employees of various organizations share performance improving ideas and innovation – or, as is more often the case – keep them to themselves.
The engineering profession offers a wide range of career opportunities to young women, from designing pollution control equipment, to supervising construction of a building, to managing hospital schedules. The possibilities of these well-paid jobs are nearly endless.
On Saturday, October 13, the University of Windsor wants to introduce local students to some of them.
Go Engineering Girl, now in its eighth year, will provide girls in grades 7 through 10—and their parents—a chance to learn more about engineering as “a caring profession.”
Downtown residents and merchants were excited by what they saw of the University’s plans during an open house Thursday at the Windsor Armouries.
“I think the value of my house is going to shoot up,” said Jon Liedtke, whose home on Victoria Avenue is within walking distance of the three buildings slated for the downtown campus. He was one of dozens of community members who turned out to view renderings, speak with University officials, and grill architects on the details.

A free public reception Friday will celebrate the Art + Life student exhibition on view now in the SoVA Projects Gallery, LeBel Building.
The participating artists include Kacie Auffrett, Bryce Clark, Lauren Divito, Erica Douglas, Cole Fortier, Jessica Howick, Amanda Laflamme, Brandon Lemire, Natalie Nadeau, Tina Suntres and Amanda White.
The closing reception will give patrons a chance to meet with the artists and starts at 2 p.m. Friday, October 5.
The University of Windsor will be well-represented at BookFest Windsor, October 25 to 27 at the Capitol Theatre and Arts Centre.
Members of the UWindsor faculty will join a number of alumni for the event, a celebration of the literary arts that will feature workshops and discussion, readings of poetry and prose, book signings and socials.
Among the professors—both past and present—who have committed to appear are Marty Gervais, Susan Gold, Karl Jirgens, Martha Lee, Nicole Markotić, Eugene McNamara and Stephen Pender.
