UWindsor artists join world’s largest public vote competition

A student, a staff member and graduates of the School of Visual Arts are among more than 1700 artists vying for a total of $560,000 in prizes in the world’s largest public vote art competition.

ArtPrize opened yesterday with more than 1500 entries in 161 venues across Grand Rapids, Michigan. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourites; round one will continue through September 29, when 10 finalists will advance to a five-day second round.

Among the entrants with a UWindsor connection are:

Drama student daring to dream of Dorothy

A UWindsor drama student is among the finalists in a national contest to land the role of Dorothy in an Andrew Lloyd Webber production of The Wizard of Oz to open in Toronto in December.

Third-year BFA acting major Danielle Wade has survived several rounds of competition, including the first installment of CBC-TV’s star search series, Over The Rainbow. Now she’s one of just nine aspiring Dorothys left. Over the next seven weeks’ worth of episodes, online voting will determine the winner of the plum role.

Open house to explore campus transformation plan

The event runs 4 to 7 p.m. in the CAW Student Centre’s Ambassador Auditorium and will feature information on:

First students enter Centre for Engineering Innovation

The promise of the Centre for Engineering Innovation definitely helped to convince Sarah Kwiatkowski to study at the University of Windsor. Now the promise is being fulfilled for the second-year electrical engineering major.

“I am so excited about having everything in one place—classes, labs, professors’ offices,” she says. “This building played a huge role in my decision to come here.”

Exhibition to combine visual arts and music

An exhibition now on display in the LeBel Building’s SoVA Projects Gallery showcases the combined talents of the schools of visual arts and music.

The public is invited to the Site, Sight, Cite faculty exhibition, featuring artwork by the instructors at the School of Visual Arts. The show will run through September 28, when a closing reception at 7 p.m. will include a solo performance by flutist Jamie Wagner, a music professor.

The gallery is open for public viewing Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

New wind tunnels being installed in CEI

The components for the first of two new wind tunnels to be installed in the new Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation began arriving late last week, much to the delight of the researchers who will be working with them.

Made by Industrial Metal Fabricators Ltd. of Chatham, the elevated 12 meter tunnel will run in a closed loop around the walls of a lab in the north-east corner of the CEI. With a 1.2 meter fan and a 30 horsepower motor, the tunnel will be capable of generating wind speeds of up to about 30 meters per second.

Centre for Engineering Innovation opening: labs today, classrooms next week

Let the learning begin.

Engineering students will enter their new home today, as labs open for undergraduate instruction.

“It is a wonderful occasion for our students and faculty,” says dean of engineering Mehrdad Saif. “This new facility will set a new standard for the technical sophistication of teaching and learning for any university in Canada.”
