Curator to lead tour of AGW art exhibition

This year’s AGW Biennial has a great array of works, which curator Iain Baxter& says represent the new energized spirit of Windsor. A professor emeritus of visual arts, he will lead a tour of the exhibition at the Art Gallery of Windsor this Friday, October 14.

Baxter& is not the only participant with a UWindsor connection. Most of the more than 30 local artists showcased have studied or taught at the School of Visual Arts.

Singing along with traffic: highway noise forces blackbirds to change their tune, biologists find

Many animals communicate using sound to attract mates, find food, and avoid predators.

Dave Wilson, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Windsor, says that rising levels of human-generated noise have raised concern for those animals. He is a member of a team of researchers who have published a new study this week in the Journal of Experimental Biology, which shows that traffic noise causes red-winged blackbirds to alter their songs.

Alumnus shortlisted for poetry prize

Phil Hall published his first book of poetry while still an undergraduate studying drama and English at the University of Windsor.

The 1973 collection, Eighteen Poems, was printed in Mexico City, he recalls: “typeset by people who didn’t speak English. It was full of typos.”

Technology to support student recruitment efforts

A team of UWindsor faculty, staff and students will meet with prospective students and their parents at the Ontario Universities Fair in Toronto, October 14 to 16.

“We are so proud of this excellent group,” says student communication and events coordinator Zora Savic. “They always do a great job of representing the University and telling our stories.”

Student researcher learns virtue of patience during Arctic field work

Dave Yurkowski learned a great deal about Arctic ecology during his two week journey to the Canadian north this summer to study how climate change affects the behaviour of ringed seals. He also learned a lot about what’s commonly referred to as one of life’s most important virtues.

“You do have to be really patient,” the master’s student said of the time he had spend waiting for a seal to be caught in the nets he helped set. “You can be sitting there for hours. But that’s just part of field work. Once the seal gets caught in the net – that’s when the action starts.”

Video contest winner scoops brand new iPad

Milos Savic doesn’t accept offers from just anyone, but when does, he prefers the University of Windsor.

A first-year student in the Arts and Sciences program, Savic took top honours in the university’s second Facebook video contest and was presented with a new iPad2 yesterday for his winning submission, a spoof of the popular Dos Equis beer commercials.

"I looked around on line to get inspiration and I went off the most interesting man in the world and I gave it a little spin and added a few of my own touches,” he said Tuesday.
