Biology student braves hurricanes and sharks on remote Pacific island

Roberto Sosa has been to some remote corners of Mexico on his quest to learn more about the songs of the wren, but says nothing compared to the month he spent this summer tracking the birds on an isolated jungle island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

“In my personal experience, this was one of my best field seasons in terms of data collection,” said Sosa, a PhD student in associate professor Dan Mennill’s lab in biological sciences.

Business students turn into pedallers for charity

Students in the Odette School of Business raised $300 for the Alzheimer Society this week with a bike-a-thon in memory of benefactor Louis Odette, who died May 18.

With his brother Edmond, Odette founded Eastern Construction Limited, one of Canada's largest general contractors. Their generous support of the UWindsor Faculty of Business led their being honoured with the naming of the Odette Building in 1991 and the Odette School of Business in 2000.

Lecture to offer look at brain neuroplasticity

Human thoughts can change the function and even the structure of our brains, a discovery Norman Doidge calls the most important breakthrough in our understanding of the brain in 400 years.

A psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he will discuss the implications in a free public lecture entitled “The Brain That Changes Itself,” Sunday, October 2, at 3 p.m. in Assumption University Chapel.

Record-setting team earns recognition from Alumni Sports Hall of Fame

The 1975 Lancer football team was dominant on the field, going undefeated during the seven-game season and setting a provincial record that still stands for fewest points allowed – just 34.

The squad will receive a Team Achievement Award at a reception Sunday, October 2, during induction ceremonies for the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame. The award honours Assumption Purple Raider or University of Windsor Lancer sports teams which have enjoyed the highest levels of success.

Graduate Students' Society puts on the dog for members

Society president Ahmed Abou Gharam called it a great turnout and was excited to have so many members of faculty and administration attend.

“We also would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to the Alumni office for sponsoring the event, coming to the event, engaging the students and providing door prizes,” he said.

Online publication provides Insight into CLEW upgrade

The Fall 2011 issue of Insight, the computer users' bulletin produced by Information Technology Services, is now available at web4.uwindsor.ca/insight/latest.

This issue provides information concerning the upgrade of the learning management system CLEW and a “heads-up” for the Storage Area Network Health Check which is scheduled to take place on June 24, 2012.

Volunteer effort promotes community literacy programs

The importance of literacy has been close to her heart for a long time, says Holly Ward, executive director of Public Affairs and Communications.

She joined UWindsor President Alan Wildeman and dozens of volunteers who spread out across Windsor-Essex on Wednesday morning, exchanging special editions of the Windsor Star for contributions to the Raise-A-Reader campaign. The effort raises funds for family literacy programs, distributing reading skills and books to local children.
