Research & Teaching Interests

Professional ethics, bioethics/ health care ethics, research ethics, the history of medical ethics in North America, 1940-1970.

Current Projects

I have been researching the ways that medical ethics was taught and practiced in Canada during the thirty year period before “the birth of the discipline of bioethics” in the early 1970s. Another focus of this research is the role of organized religion in medical ethics discourse between 1940 and 1970.

During my time as Chair of the University of Windsor’s Research Ethics Board (2000-2008), I developed an interest in examining how researchers engaged human subjects in research. My current focus examines research ethics in North America between 1940 until the early 1970s.
