Who We Serve

The Department of Legal Services is responsible for all of the University’s legal affairs. We provide legal advice to the Board of Governors, the President, administration, faculty and staff on legal matters that involve or affect the University of Windsor.

The Department of Legal Services does not provide personal legal services to students or employees at the University of Windsor but may provide advice and guidance for University sponsored student organizations and events.

Students who need personal legal services can contact the following legal services available on campus:


What We Do

Our office ensures that the University has legal representation, advice, and guidance for all matters that affect its legal interests.  We are responsible to:

  • draft and review contracts
  • draft and review leases and licences
  • engage in risk management strategies
  • support procedural processes
  • address privacy concerns
  • respond to litigation and tribunal processes
  • review and draft administrative policies and procedures
  • provide advice and support in project development
  • provide advice on labour and employment matters

We may also hire external counsel to help if the matter requires it.  Please see the Retention of External Legal Services Policy for further information. 


When You Should Contact Us

If you encounter any of the following situations, please contact the Department of Legal Services immediately at legalservices@uwindsor.ca:

  • If you receive any court- or tribunal-related document respecting the University, its Board of Governors, students, employees, related entities, or volunteers
  • If you receive a communication from an external lawyer concerning the University
  • If you become aware that a legal action or proceeding is threatened or anticipated against the University or any of its employees or related entities in respect of an action taken on behalf of the University
  • If you are entering into or reviewing a contract on behalf of the University
  • If you become aware of any other legal or governance issue that may have strategic importance or University-wide implications
