Frequency of Meetings
The Research Safety Committee meets quarterly to review permit applications, with meetings held in September, December, March, and June of each year. If an application requires review in between meetings, please contact the committee at firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire about an expedited approval. The Chair and committee can review applications in between meetings and, if criteria are met, issue an “interim approval” decision prior to the next meeting to allow researchers to proceed with their project. Final approval will then be affirmed at the next meeting.

Duration of Approval
A safety certificate permit may be valid between one to three years, depending on the classification of risk for the project and the activities involved. If applicable, your safety certificate permit will list an expiry date. While the respective safety officer and Research Safety Committee will make every attempt to remind researchers of an upcoming renewal, it is the responsibility of the researcher to ensure that their safety permit remains valid. When a safety permit is set to expire, researchers should submit a renewal of their safety permit if they intend to continue with their research activities.
If a researcher has any changes to a project certified under a safety permit, including a change in authorized personnel, location, or materials used, an amendment to the permit must be submitted to the Research Safety Committee for review. Once an amendment has been submitted, the committee, in collaboration with the respective safety officer, will determine if the research activities may continue under the current permit or if an application for a new safety permit needs to be submitted.
