Sunday concert promises afternoon of jazz

Clarinetist Dave Bennett and the members of his jazz quartet—drummer Doug Cobb, pianist Tad Weed and Kurt Krahnke on string bass—will feature classic swing era tunes in their concert Sunday, October 28.

Bennett premiered his Tribute to Benny Goodman in November 2003 at Windsor's Capitol Theatre. The concert resulted in his first feature CD of Goodman material.

Bennett’s stage presence, knowledge of the details of Goodman recordings—and his penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats and double-breasted suits—transport listeners back to the swing era.

Tree planting commemorates drama professor

Friends, family and colleagues honoured drama professor Tedfred Myers, who died in February, with a memorial tree planting Friday on the northwest side of the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre.

Myers joined the University of Windsor in 1981 as a technical director in the School of Dramatic Art, became its technical coordinator and lighting designer in 1984, and became an assistant professor in 2003 after many years of teaching as a sessional instructor.

Friday’s ceremony included the installation of a memorial plaque and the scattering of Myers’ cremains on the site.

Book tells forgotten tales of Windsor

A free public reception Tuesday will launch the latest book by the University’s resident writing professional.

Ghost RoadGhost Road and other forgotten stories of Windsor is a new collection of local legends—only this is the Windsor we don’t know, says Marty Gervais. The best-selling author of The Rumrunners and My Town, he says these stories carry with them traces of the city’s weird and wonderful history.

Viewing party to watch Stilt Guys stand up on national television

UWindsor drama grads Mark Lefebvre (BFA 1988) and Kyle Sipkens (BFA 2008) can say that they walked tall on the popular CBC television series Dragons’ Den.

What the Stilt Guys can’t say—yet— is whether they cut a deal with any of the show’s entrepreneurs.

“We signed a non-disclosure agreement prohibiting us from revealing the outcome of our pitch,” says Lefebvre. “Not even my mom knows what went down!”

Students sought for feedback on Senate committees

The University Secretariat invites students interested in the University’s governance to participate in a focus group discussing the composition and mandate of Senate’s Student Committee and Academic Policy Committee.

The session will run on campus from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 1. Students interested in providing constructive feedback should RSVP by Friday, October 26, to alisonz@uwindsor.ca.

Presidential candidates not mixing religion and politics, visiting prof says

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are deliberately avoiding discussing their religious backgrounds in the current U.S. presidential election campaign because they’re keenly aware of the collateral damage it would cause them both, according to a high-profile political scientist from the University of Notre Dame who will deliver a lecture here next week.

Funding available for women's safety initiatives

Creating on-going opportunities to provide a secure campus environment for everyone is the impetus behind Women’s Safety Grant funding available annually through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, says Kaye Johnson, director of the Office of Human Rights.

Applications are now available for the funds, which Johnson says have been used to provide everything from safety cameras and campus emergency phones to Welcome Week outreach programs, personal defense courses for women, and faculty research into student safety needs.

Fair to showcase opportunities for continuing education

The Centre for Career Education, in partnership with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, presents the seventh annual Continuing Education Fair on Tuesday, October 23.

More than 40 exhibitors from educational institutions will showcase their graduate and post-graduate programs to University of Windsor students. This year, the fair will spread across two locations in the CAW Student Centre, with exhibitors in the Commons area as well as in Ambassador Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
