Lancer women’s basketball head coach Chantal Vallée is among the community leaders who will attend a networking event for Windsor’s young adults, students and professionals on Thursday, September 27.
The GenNext committee of the United Way offers young leaders a chance to meet and learn from their peers and mentors, as well as opportunities to volunteer and better the community, says coordinator Anjana Jacob, a 2011 graduate of the Odette School of Business.
Lina Nardone, an administrative assistant in the Faculty of Education, won yesterday’s DailyNews trivia contest and the prize of two tickets to see the University Players production of Jake’s Women.
Nardone’s name was drawn from all contestants who correctly responded that Alan Alda received a Tony nomination for his 1992 Broadway portrayal of Jake, Anne Archer played Maggie in the 1996 television adaptation, and The Goodbye Girl was a film before it was a play.
The campus community barbecue is an example of how the university wants to serve students, says provost Leo Groarke.
He was one of the campus celebrities who put on aprons to hand out a free lunch at the event September 20, an experience he said he looks forward to.
“Today the emphasis is on the food for the body, but the rest of the time, the emphasis is on food for the mind,” Dr. Groarke said.

Davor Srsen was in the middle of the arduous task of finishing his masters’ degree the last time the University’s Centre for Career Education held an event to showcase for students some of the region’s most promising employment sectors.
“I was rushing to finish, but I got an e-mail about the career fair and I decided to check it out,” said the recent graduate of electrical engineering.
The next time Adriana Baggio starts getting stressed and cranky about the amount of studying she has to do, she’ll try to remember her friends in Nicaragua.
Along with about a dozen other students, Baggio travelled to a tiny village in the Central American nation this summer through an innovative exchange program called Students Offering Support.

A couple of University of Windsor political scientists will be among the headliners at a debate Thursday, entitled “Beyond Borders: Challenges and Opportunities of the Canada/US Relationship.”
Professor Steven Brooks will moderate as Bill Anderson, Ontario Research Chair in Cross-Border Transportation Studies, takes on David Dyment of Carleton University.
The event is coupled with a dinner for the Windsor-Essex branch of the Canadian International Council and starts at 6 p.m. September 27 at the Caboto Club, 2175 Parent Avenue at Tecumseh Road.
If there’s one thing Michael Chen will remember about the summer of 2012, it’s that he never really had a summer.
A recent master’s graduate from the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, he spent three months in the southern hemisphere working with the environmental team at Solid Energy, a coal mining company based in Christchurch, New Zealand.
