Scientific approach nets Caboto cookbook for trivia contest winner

Laura McLean, secretary to the dean of science, is in a distinct minority. She was one of just two respondents to get every answer correct in Wednesday’s trivia quiz marking the 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year.

Since hers was the name that came out of the hat, McLean received a copy of Cooking with Giovanni Caboto, courtesy of the University Bookstore.

One question in particular tripped up the majority of contestants—the final gift in The 12 Days of Christmas. In her e-mail response, McLean called it a “trick question.”

Information Technology Services to welcome new executive director in January

Provost Leo Groarke has announced the appointment of Bala Kathiresan as executive director of Information Technology Services, effective January 2.

“He brings to the University a wealth of experience gained in the management of information systems in the public and private sector,” Dr. Groarke says, noting his service as executive vice-president and chief operating officer, corporate services, for Ontario’s largest multisite community teaching hospital, comprising seven sites, serving 434,000 residents across 12 municipalities in Niagara.

DailyNews to stick to daily publication through next week

In contrast to previous practice, DailyNews will publish each weekday through December 21, as well as January 2, 3 and 4 in the new year.

“Some of those editions might be pretty short, given people’s schedules,” says editor Kevin Johnson. “However, we are trying to provide the best possible service and hope that retaining daily publication will make it easier for readers to get the information they need.”

Book signing a reminder that the past makes a perfect present

The past is the perfect present, says Chris Edwards.

The UWindsor grad (BA 1983, MA 1985) and his life and business partner Elaine Weeks (BA 1985) have already sold 4,000 copies of their nostalgic coffee table book, 500 Ways You Know You’re From Windsor. They will sign copies as a pre-holiday promotion at the University Bookstore kiosk in the CAW Student Centre on Wednesday, December 12, from noon to 2 p.m.

Sing-along concert to raise organ donation awareness

A trio of music professors will join a UWindsor grad for a concert and sing-along at Windsor’s All Saints’ Church, Sunday, December 16. The event will raise money for organ donation awareness.

Pianist Gregory Butler and organist David Palmer have been asked for several years to put on a special Christmas performance but have never had time until now.

“Not only have we found the time to do this, but All Saints’ has graciously provided the space,” Dr. Butler posted on the website of sponsor Sport Fest Windsor.

Still time to join faculty and staff holiday party

The Holiday Big Chill is approaching, and catering manager Dean Kissner wants faculty and staff members to know it’s not too late to join the party.

There are still tickets available for the luncheon, Thursday, December 13 in Vanier Hall’s Winclare Room A. The event will take the form of a stand-up reception, with food stations featuring festive fare, and ample opportunity to converse with colleagues in a casual setting.

“Our faculty and staff guests will enjoy a beautiful holiday setting that is sure to put them in the spirit of the season,” Kissner says.

Lancers step up to the plate to encourage healthy eating

What’s blue and gold and encourages UWindsor students to eat healthy during exams? Lancer varsity athletes!

When nutritionist Chris Wellington wanted to promote healthy diet choices on video screens at Food Services outlets across campus, she knew just where to turn.

“What sends a better message about eating right than images of our Lancers?” she asked. “They are the embodiment of the healthy balance we hope all our students will strive for.”

Organizers issue call for participation in Accessibility Awareness Day

Organizers of Accessibility Awareness Day, March 5 on the University of Windsor campus, have issued a call for proposals inviting presenters to share their expertise and experiences on the theme “Building an Accessible Community.”

The interactive day will provide an opportunity for members of the University community as well as members of the broader Windsor-Essex community to come together to learn about and discuss accessibility initiatives.

Topics to be discussed include:

Faculty of Education celebrates 50 years of teaching excellence

A dinner reception November 30 at the Ciociaro Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the UWindsor Faculty of Education.

The event, “Excellence in Teaching,” provided 250 guests—including former deans, professors and alumni—with an opportunity to reminisce and reconnect while giving current teacher candidates a glimpse into the origins and evolution of the Windsor Teachers’ College into the current Faculty of Education.

During the cocktail hour, teacher candidate Leah Harris sang and played piano to entertain attendees.
