Champagne breakfast to make Lancer women’s basketball fans part of the team

The Mimosa Breakfast Celebration in support of Lancer women’s basketball will give fans a chance to meet the players and head coach Chantal Vallée on Sunday, December 1, at 10 a.m. in Ambassador Auditorium.

The event is a fundraiser in support of the team, which won its third straight national title last season, and will host the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship tournament in March 2014.

Vallée says funds raised at the event help to cover many extra costs of competition.

“Everything from travel to tournaments and keeping up with hard-worn shoes, we count on our supporters to help us make ends meet,” she says.

Tickets are available in two price categories:

  • $125 includes a $100 tax receipt and recognition at the event;
  • $45 includes a $20 tax receipt.

For tickets, please contact special events manager Mary-Ann Rennie by Thursday, November 28, at 519-253-3000, ext. 7059, or e-mail mrennie@uwindsor.ca.

Ryan SnelgroveRyan Snelgrove has found an innovative way to incorporate the use of social media in his classroom.

Prof gives students something to tweet about

When students first started bringing laptop computers in to wireless classrooms, many teachers were concerned about keeping their students’ attention away from the infinite number of distractions available on the internet.

Rather than looking at modern communications technology as a hindrance, a kinesiology professor is embracing it and is now using Twitter as a mandatory part of his classroom debates.

Ryan Snelgrove holds weekly debates for the 220 students in his sports ethics class and creates a hashtag for each of one of those forums. Students are required to tweet their thoughts about the issue and during the class, Dr. Snelgrove moderates the debate while monitoring the tweets.

A graduate assistant collects all of the tweets and after the class, Snelgrove grades them for their quality and quantity.

“It’s an effective method of ensuring that students are staying engaged with what’s being discussed in the class,” said Snelgrove, who earned his Master’s degree here and a PhD at the University of Waterloo. “In a class this size, not everyone is going to have a chance to be heard, so the students think it’s a great way to stay involved.”

Snelgrove’s final debate of the semester will be held at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in room 140, Human Kinetics Building.

Charity drive shows group’s dedication to community action

When it opened in October 2011, the Windsor Youth Centre was the area’s only drop-in centre for homeless and at-risk youth. And more than two years later, it still is.

A group of UWindsor graduate students is looking to support this important community resource, by holding a Winter Charity Drive to collect items needed for the centre’s operations.

The University of Windsor Community Action Group is seeking donations of:

  • diapers and diaper bags, wash cloths, bottle brushes, crib sheets;
  • baby lotion, baby oil, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner;
  • paper towels, sponges, spray cleaner, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent;
  • aluminum foil, plastic wrap, zipper lock bags, resealable food containers;
  • snack cups, crackers, cereal, and pop-top canned goods.

Drop off donations to room 175, Chrysler Hall South. To inquire about making a monetary contribution, e-mail uwincag@gmail.com.
