St. Anne’s students show small is mighty during penny drive to support research

Pupils at St. Anne’s French Immersion School were tickled pink to support cancer research again this year during their annual penny drive, raising $3,488 in copper, and more than $19,000 in total, including government fund matching, since the annual campaign began in 2008.

Students presented the donation to UWindsor representatives Friday during a school-wide assembly. St. Anne’s teacher and penny drive organizer John Dufour said he expects even more pennies to trickle in throughout the month of June.

UWindsor team to take on 100-km charity hike

Running doesn’t necessarily prepare you for the rigours of walking, says Richard Hayes.

An experienced marathon runner, he is preparing for a different challenge as part of a team of four who will be participating in a 100-kilometre hike along trails south of Georgian Bay over 48 hours, July 13 to 15.

“It’s not the distance alone” that poses the problem, Hayes says. “It’s being awake and on your feet all that time.”

Exhibition to display high school student artworks

A public reception Thursday, May 31, will celebrate the opening the annual high school student art exhibition in the LeBel Building’s Projects Gallery.

Now in its seventh year (hence the title Locale VII), the show features more than 300 works in all sorts of media.

“This year’s exhibit is absolutely awesome,” says visual arts professor Julie Sando, who has been hanging the show in the gallery. “It is visually completely overwhelming.”

Day of activities demonstrates fun side to engineering

Spending a day in the Centre for Engineering Innovation helped convince Dilshan Pieris that the subject could be fun.

“We crash-tested crumple zones for some remote control trucks and built bridges out of popsicle sticks,” he said. “Engineering is more interesting after today!”

Pieris was one of about 100 grade 11 students of academic and enriched science at Vincent Massey Secondary School to participate in the all-day experience Friday, May 25.

Roast of UWindsor chancellor raises $5.3 million toward Centre for Engineering Innovation

University of Windsor chancellor Ed Lumley was a willing target of endless barbs about everything from his hair to his football skills, delivered by former prime ministers, premiers and federal and provincial cabinet ministers during a roast Wednesday, May 30, that helped raise $5.3 million for the engineering building under construction on the UWindsor campus.

Drama grads have high hopes for Dragons’ Den appearance

Drama alumni Mark Lefebvre (BFA 1988) and Kyle Sipkens (BFA 2008) are walking tall after taping a segment for the CBC television series Dragons’ Den to pitch an expansion to their business, Stilt Guys.

The program matches entrepreneurs to investors, and Lefebvre said the two hope to hire more entertainers to join their company, which sends the costumed actors on stilts to make appearances. Already experiencing multiple bookings around busy summer weekends, they want to expand their business so they don’t have to turn down gigs.
