Innovative industrial research rewarded with provincial funding
University of Windsor professors received funding from the Centre for Materials and Manufacturing:
Xueyuan Nie, Department of Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering, received a grant for "Wear and corrosion prevention for Mg engine applications." Dr. Nie and his research team are developing an eco-friendly coating that prevents corrosion and wear to engine blocks in passenger vehicles. Nie’s electrolytic plasma process has the potential to provide significant fuel savings and considerable emissions reduction.
The Centre for Materials and Manufacturing co-invests with industry to encourage the development of competitive, industrially-relevant technologies and engages the brightest minds at Ontario universities and colleges to address challenges faced by businesses in the province.
The Centre for Materials and Manufacturing is a division of Ontario Centre for Excellence, a Government Funding Agency in Ontario.

One of our surface technologies ELECTROLYTIC PLASMA NITRIDING OF CAST IRON AND STEEL was selected and published as Advanced Coatings & Surface Technology Alerts by Frost & Sullivan (www.ti.frost.com) on 17 Feb 2006. The Technical Insights division of Frost & Sullivan tracks and analyzes emerging trends and technologies including the Advanced Coating and Surface Technology sector. The Advanced Coating and Surface Technology Alerts are read by researchers, engineers and executives from top companies and organizations throughout the world.

One of our paper (with Dr. Cui from the University of Minnesota) - A Micromachined Wide-Bandwidth Magnetic Field Sensor Based on All-PMMA Electron Tunneling Transducer, has been published in IEEE Sensors Journal, 6 (1) (2006) 97-105 and an image from the article was selected as the journal cover page.

Another paper (with Dr. Cheng from GM R&D Center) - Nanoscale Wear and Machining Behaviour of Nanolayer Interfaces, has been published in Nano Letters, 5(2005) 1992-1996. This journal has a very high ISI impact factor: 8.40.

A paper (with Prof. Matthews from the University of Sheffield) - Review: Plasma Electrolysis for Surface Engineering, Surface and Coatings Technology, 122(1999)73-93 has been cited 1000 times by researchers so far.
Award
Professor Xueyuan Nie (left, 3rd row) is again one of recipients of Excellence in Research Awards at the University of Windsor for 2005. He was a honouree of the research excellence award in 2004.

Linlin Wang is awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) 2005-2006. She, as an international student, is the first one in Engineering Materials Program at the University of Windsor who wins such an award.
Yueyu Ma is awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) 2005.

Changes to work rules good news for international students
Initiatives by the Canadian government to attract and retain international students address a long-standing issue for the University of Windsor, says Clayton Smith, vice-provost.~
The changes, announced on April 18, 2005, will allow international students at public post-secondary institutions:
- to work off-campus while completing their studies, and
- to work for two years — rather than the current one year — after graduation.
Both changes come with caveats, however. Rules on working while at school are still to be negotiated between the federal and provincial governments. And jobs held by international students after graduation must be based outside the major centres of Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal.

We are pleased to have a new graduate student Mr. Peng Zhang (graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University) joining our research group in January, 2005.
Announcement
Two Ph.D./Master's graduate positions are currently open to students who has a background in TEM and/or PVD/CVD. The related research project are being supported by NSERC and General Motors. The recruited students will have an opportunity to be trained in Univ. of Windsor and GM.
