GLIER researcher Dr. Daniel Heath heads $9.1 million grant to launch a genome project to study environmental DNA

Dr. Daniel Heath, along with colleagues at University of Windsor and institutions across Canada received a $9.1 million dollar grant to study environmental DNA (eDNA) in the Great Lakes.  This allows researchers to detect the presence of fish species from the DNA left behind in the water.  Dr. Heath calles this a "fish survey" toolkit.  The second phase of the project will be to develop a "fish health" toolkit.  “We’re developing genomic tools to manage and conserve freshwater fish stocks" said Dr. Heath.
