Harmful algal blooms such as those found in Lake Erie produce microsystins, which are toxic to people and pets.  GLIER graduate student Chelsea Salter is studying how natural microbial communities are able to break down the toxic microsystins and therefore reduce the harmful effects of algal blooms.
