Announcing the 2022 Ecosystem Approach Conference

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, we are excited to announce a one-day virtual global conference & in-person expert synthesis workshop on the ecosystem approach, the longstanding holistic and integrated approach to science and management at a large scale.  Save the date: Monday August 22nd, 2022 for this global event!

The ecosystem approach has long served as a collaborative framework for governing, researching and stewarding the health of the Laurentian Great Lakes, the African Great Lakes and large ecosystems globally. Operationalized in North America/Turtle Island through the Great Lakes Areas of Concern and remedial action plans, we now have over 40 years of experiences in applying an ecosystem approach in both science and management.  It is time to take stock of where the ecosystem approach originated, where we are now in terms of its application, and what is its future direction. The conference will be supplemented by a dynamic set of synthesis workshops focused on its origin, an operational framework, human dimensions, technological innovation, education, outreach, Indigenous management systems, the science-policy interface and interconnections at a range of scales.

We are excited to announce our plenary speaker, Dr. Hugh Possingham, a world-renown expert on the science and practice of ecosystem-based management of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, former Chief Scientist for the Nature Conservancy, and currently a Professor at The University of Queensland and the Queensland Chief Scientist in Australia.

All are invited to register to attend, present and participate in a one-day virtual conference featuring the leading edge of knowledge, exemplar case studies and the exploration of critical dimensions to science, people and management. The program will feature lightning talks, interactive panels and equitable registration rates are offered to ensure broad participation by diverse speakers.

Registration is now open! https://conferences.aehms.org/ecosystem-approach/

CALL FOR EXPERTS & EARLY CAREER FELLOWS!  Following the global conference, an invitation-only synthesis workshop will take place on August 23 & 24, 2022 on the University of Windsor campus.  There are still some spaces available in each thematic section for subject experts along with early career fellows. Synthesis participants will work with work group co-chairs in a dynamic in person and hybrid workshop. Applications are due June 15th.
