The aim of this project was to enhance the organizational safety culture by establishing a common safety language and knowledge base, for all system employees, utilizing current information technology to develop and deliver an interactive, standardized patient safety curriculum.

The horrors of medical error are well established. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that up to 98,000 patients die each year in the United States due to medical error. In 2004, Baker and colleagues identified that up to 24,000 patients die in Canadian hospitals each year from preventable medical errors. There is growing evidence that patient safety education can influence organizational safety culture, now recognized as essential in error prevention.

This poster will provide an overview of the outcome measures from an innovative e-learning program developed to educate employees on hazards in the health care environment and introduce strategies that can be implemented to reduce the hazards.
