Residence Accessibility or Unique Needs

Housing and Residence Life is committed to supporting students who have accessibility needs and unique needs. To consider your request, we require information to best provide you with a room assignment that matches your needs. We cannot guarantee specific residence room types or buildings based on student preferences; however, we will work to ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided based on your documented needs. All room assignments are subject to the applicable residence fee for the room type and location assigned.

All documentation is required to be submitted by June 6, 2025. If you will not be able to provide documentation by that date or have any questions about acceptable documentation, please email resservices@uwindsor.ca.  Any late request forms can only be accommodated if space allows.

Once you have the proper documentation completed return to the application and upload the documents. Housing and Residence Life will reach out by email if there any questions prior to room assignments.

For the purposes of our application, we consider the following types of ACCESSIBILITY REQUESTS:

  • Medical (Examples: mental health related, allergies, environmental sensitivities immunocompromised etc.)
  • Disability (Examples: hearing impairment, mobility-related accessibility needs, learning disability etc.
  • Service Animal
  • Dietary Restrictions related to your Meal Plan (including food-related allergies), this information will be shared with Food Services

For the purposes of our application, we consider the following types of UNIQUE NEEDS REQUESTS:

  • Religious and/or cultural
  • Height (over 6’4”)
  • Financial (require the least expensive residence option)

Supporting Documentation – ACCESSIBILTY NEEDS

We do not require a diagnosis from an attesting professional; however, medical documentation is required for accessibility needs requests.  We will need information regarding the existence of a disability or medical need and the details of the functional limitations. Information required includes, but is not limited to:

  • Explanation of the nature of the student’s situation and functional limitations that require an accommodation request to be made
  • Explanation of room types and amenities the professional deems to be applicable to the needs of the student, including, but not limited to single room, semi-private washroom, wheelchair accessible washroom, access to daily cooking, special bed setup, access/space for assistive living devices.

For accessibility needs, you can download and use the forms from the application however we also accept a medical note provided it includes the information listed above and is specific to housing requirements.

Supporting Documentation – UNIQUE NEEDS

For unique needs requests we require a signed statement from the student rather than medical documentation. The letter should include but is not limited to:

  • Explanation of the nature of the student’s situation and the reasons that require an accommodation request to be made
  • Explanation of room types and amenities applicable to the needs of the student, including, but not limited to single room, least expensive residence option, semi-private washroom, special bed setup.

To provide the appropriate accommodation for accessibility needs, the following steps must be followed prior to a room assignment being made

  1. Provide the following document to your attesting professional for completion - Attesting Professional Supporting Documentation Form

  2. All completed forms are to be uploaded into your application on the Housing Portal
  3. If you are supported by a service animal, you must schedule a meeting with Student Accessibility Services to discuss the intake process to register your service animal for accommodation in addition to submitting the Attesting Professional Supporting Documentation Form
