Departmental Scholarships

Unless otherwise noted, students will be automatically considered for all scholarships, bursaries, and awards if they meet the eligibility requirements.

AAU Entrance Scholarship: Two awards of $500

Awarded annually to two undergraduate Canadian Citizen, permanent residents or protected persons students entering any year-one program directly from high school leading to the degree of Bachelor of Mathematics, including any combined program with Mathematics, with an admission average of at least 85% together with an average of at least 85% in the courses MHF4U and MCV4U or equivalent. Of those students eligible, the award will be given to the student with the highest average in the courses MHF4U and MCV4U or equivalent. In the case of a tie, the award will be given to the student with the highest admission average. 

Father D. T. Faught Bursary Award: Two awards of $1,000 

Awarded annually to one or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents (including those with protected persons status) entering year 2 in good standing in any undergraduate program, including joint and combined programs, of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, making normal progress towards degree completion, and assigned based on financial need. Normal progress means that the recipient has achieved a grade of at least 60% in each of MATH 1020, MATH 1250 or 1260, MATH 1720 or MATH 1760, and MATH 1730 and has completed 30 credits. This scholarship was established in 1975 by friends in memory of Father Donald Faught, long-time Head of the Mathematics Department. 

Zakon Scholarship: One award of $1,500 

Awarded to a student entering year 3 in honours Mathematics and Statistics. The recipient must have completed all the required courses for the 200-level honours degree in Mathematics and Statistics and have a major average of 83% and a cumulative average of 75%.

The WK & KY Fung Foundation Scholarship: Two awards of $1,500

Two scholarships of $1,500 each awarded in the Fall term to students entering fourth year in any program in Mathematics and Statistics, including joint programs and combined majors. The successful students will have completed at least 90 course credits (30 courses) with a cumulative average and a major average of at least 80%. One award will be given to the student with the highest average in MATH-3200, 3580, 3581, and 3590 and STAT-3920 and 3950. The other award will be given to the student with the highest average in MATH-3200, 3580, 3581, and 3590. If the same student has the highest average in both sets of courses, the second award will be given to the student with the second highest average in MATH-3200, 3580, 3581, and 3590. Ties will be broken by the cumulative average. Awards not given in one year will be given in the next year. The scholarship winners will be selected by the Head of Mathematics and Statistics in October of each year, and the award will be applied to the winner’s tuition accounts.

Krishan Duggal Scholarship for Undergraduate Math Excellence: One award of $1,000

Awarded annually to a student entering fourth year in any undergraduate program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The award is restricted to Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and Protected Persons who have completed at least 90 course credits (30 courses) with a cumulative average and a major average of at least 80% (must have completed, with grades of at least 60%, Differential Calculus [MATH-1720 or MATH-1760], Integral Calculus [MATH-1730], Linear Algebra I, II and III [MATH-1250, 2250, 2251], Mathematical Foundations [MATH-1020], Vector Calculus [MATH-2780], Differential Equations [MATH-2790], Abstract Algebra [MATH-3200], Introduction to Analysis I and II [MATH-3580 & 3581], Complex Variables [MATH-3590], Introduction to Probability [STAT- 2920], and Introduction to Statistics [STAT-2950]). The award will be given to the student with the highest major average. Ties will be broken by cumulative average then grades in MATH 2790, then 2780, then 3590, then 3581, and then 3580. The scholarship winner will be selected by the Head of Mathematics and Statistics in October of each year, and the award will be applied to the winner’s tuition account.

Krishan Duggal Graduate Scholarship for Math Excellence: One award of $2,000

Awarded to a student in a master’s or doctoral program in Mathematics or Statistics who has completed at least one term of study at the graduate level and who has a cumulative average of at least 80% in all graduate courses. The award will be given on the basis of academic excellence, taking into account course grades, research productivity, and a letter from the research supervisor. The Mathematics and Statistics Graduate Studies Committee will select the winner in January of each year. This award is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons.

Derrick Tracy Graduate Scholarship for Statistical Excellence: One award of $1,000

Awarded to a full-time Master's student in the Mathematics and Statistics (Statistics Field) program. Must have completed two terms of full-time study, have successfully completed at least four graduate level STAT courses, and be registered in STAT-8970 Thesis (MSc) or in STAT-8960 Major Paper for the term the scholarship is awarded. Award will be given to the eligible candidate with the highest cumulative average (must have a cumulative average of at least 80%). Assigned. No application required.

Masters of Actuarial Science Scholarships: Two awards of $1,000

Awarded to the two students with the highest averages at the end of the third term of the four-term Master’s of Actuarial Science Program.

Alumni Actuarial Science Award: $1,000.00 (effective Fall 2024)

Awarded annually to one Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (includes those with Protected Persons status) entering Year 4 (SM7) in good standing in the Bachelor of Mathematics Honours Actuarial Science or Bachelor of Mathematics undergraduate program of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, that has graduated from a Windsor or Essex County secondary school and that has completed 5 of the following 7 courses: ACSC-3980, MATH-3200, MATH-3590, MATH-3960, STAT-3920, STAT-3950, STAT-3960 and passed at least one Society of Actuaries examination. The award will be given to the student with the highest major average. Ties will be broken first by the cumulative average, then, if necessary, by the average of the marks in MATH-3960, STAT-3960 and ACSC-3980. Further ties will be broken at the discretion of the Department Head. The award will be given in the Fall term each year.

Putnam Competition Award: One award of $50

Awarded to the undergraduate student who receives the highest score in the annual Putnam Competition.

LC Memorial Award for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students in STEM

A scholarship for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math. Five awards of up to $20,000 per year to cover tuition, residence, and a meal plan, if required, to eligible students. More information is forthcoming. External Scholarships

CANSSI Ontario Recruitment (CORE) Scholarship program

The CANSSI Ontario Recruitment (CORE) Scholarship is a new program for domestic students who plan to pursue PhD at universities in Ontario. It is open to candidates who have applied or may apply to statistics PhD programs, with the intention of beginning their studies in 2025, and who have not yet accepted an admissions offer.
