Faces of Racism: Exploring the Everyday Racialized Experience of Black Women in Windsor-Essex

Faces of Racism

The Project

Sociology faculty members, Dr. Jane Ku and Dr. Francisca Omorodion are conducting a research project along with researchers in other discipline and community partners to explore everyday racism experienced by African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) women in Windsor Essex.

As a result of colonialism and normalization of white supremacy, ACB women, especially those who are newcomers to Canada, lack the confidence and language to talk about racism, and explain their experiences only as adjustment difficulties while many ACB women voicing their marginalization face sanctions or simply ignored. Racism undermines their social and physical wellbeing, as well as their relationships at home and in society. This study will offer an intersectional analysis of racism – that is, racism is experienced very differently by ACB women compared to ACB men and differently racialized women.
