Job Fair Preparation Tips

Benefits of attending the Job Fair:

  • Talk face to face with company representatives and industry professionals from the local area, nationally, and internationally.
  • Make a good (or great) impression that will help you stand out.
  • Learn more about the companies who are hiring and their hiring processes.
  • Network with employers and market your skills!

Preparation for the Job Fair:

  • Research the employers that plan to attend. Information can be found on the company's web site (see links on the Employer List).
  • Prepare questions for the employers - show interest and knowledge about the company.
    • Don’t ask information you could easily have learned on the employer’s website
    • Don’t ask about salary and benefits (this should not be initiated by the job seeker at a job fair)
  • Prepare a resume that presents your education, skills and background clearly and concisely.
  • Estimate the number of employers that you plan to visit and bring twice that many resumes. Also, be prepared to fill out applications at the event.
  • Be prepared that some employers may not accept hard copy resumes and so they may require you submit an on-line application. This does not mean they are giving you the brush off.
  • Prepare and practice a 45 to 60 second commercial that introduces yourself, your education, skills and background and why you are interested in working with the company.
  • Be sure to bring your student ID card from either University of Windsor or St. Clair College - it is required for admission.

During the Job Fair - Show Time!

  • Make sure to bring your Student ID card from University of Windsor or St. Clair College as well as several copies of your resume, information about which companies you plan to visit, and a list of questions you may want to ask. Carrying a portfolio will help you keep your materials organized.
  • Dress and act professionally. You may be meeting your new boss for the first time and you want to make an excellent first impression. Your purpose is to make a good impression and create an opening for further contact.
    • Watch your manners and mannerisms
    • Have a good firm handshake and make eye contact
    • Be friendly, speak clearly, be engaging and keep a positive attitude.
  • Be evaluated on more than your resume:  let your interpersonal, communication and etiquette skills shine.
  • THANK the employers for their time.
  • Take reminder notes of your conversation.
  • Have an open mind: if you have time to visit employers not originally on your list, you might learn something new.  If nothing else, you can practice initiating conversation.
  • Respect employers’ materials/sample items:  Some employers may have information for you to take and/or “give aways”, while others may have limited quantities.  Always check with employers before taking any materials.
  • Be courteous: Not only are you representing yourself, but you are also representing your school.  Be respectful of other students who may be waiting to speak to the representative as well by keeping your questions brief.
