Creative Writing Undergraduate Application Form and Submission

Complete this form and submit a portfolio representative of your best creative writing by:

  • May 26 for Fall term  (ENGL-2710)
  • May 26 for Fall term (​ENGL-4710)
  • September 30 for Winter creative writing courses

Please complete a separate form and portfolio for each course.

Academic Information

We recommend students take creative writing courses in ascending order, though we recognize that this may not always be possible or desirable.

Please be reminded that students may take ENGL-3710 more than once, for credit, as it is a Special Topics course, and designed differently every year.

Portfolio Submission

Please attach your creative writing portfolio submission(s) under the course(s) of your choice, for consideration in the forthcoming teaching year. Only the creative writing admissions committee will have access to your portfolio.

Please save your files in Rich Text Format (RTF).
From MS Word, choose File - Save As... from the menus. Change the Save as type: to 'Rich Text Format'.


Files must be less than 2 MB.
Allowed file types: rtf.

As part of the 2710 application process, students MUST complete the following exercise. The exercise is in TWO parts; students must choose ONE poetry assignment and ONE fiction assignment, and “inhabit” these texts as part of the portfolio application.

If you are applying to ENGL-2710 - Creative Writing I, the portfolio you upload and attach to this online application form must include:

If you are applying to ENGL-3710 - Creative Writing II: Special Topics please note: while this course will focus on a specific genre/mode/topic with that focus changing from year to year, students need not tailor portfolios accordingly. As with portfolios for the other creative writing seminars, students should simply submit a sampling of their best writing.

The portfolio you upload and attach to this online application form must include 15 to 20 (double-spaced only) pages representative of your best work.
