When Hossein Jafari first arrived at UWindsor’s campus in January of 2024, he had two destinations. First, the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation, where his Master of Engineering Civil Engineering program would be housed, and second, the Toldo Lancer Centre, where he would start to build both mind and body towards a future in competitive bodybuilding.

“When I saw the fitness facilities, I was shocked. Wow!” remarked Jafari.

“Were it not for the Toldo Lancer Centre, I think I might have been upset and maybe even homesick as it was very hard to leave home. I did so many workouts there, met many friends and started my time here in Canada.”

Some 17 months later at spring convocation, Jafari earned his graduate degree, adding to the impressive list of hardware he has claimed during his time in Windsor.

Just weeks prior, Jafari won first place in the light heavyweight division at the 2025 Canadian Physique Alliance Fouad Abiad Championships, having placed second in 2024. He also claimed the overall award in men’s bodybuilding. He has since earned another second place in the biggest amateur event in Ontario, the Toronto Pro-Qualifier.

For Jafari, putting in the work, whether study, training or employment, was simply about setting goals and doing whatever was necessary to achieve them.

“My mentality was if I gave up on one, I’d be giving up on the other,” said Jafari.

“It was hard, but I did both and I proved myself to myself.”

Jafari wrestled for eight years and competed nationally in Iran before pivoting to bodybuilding seven years ago.  Upon moving to Windsor, he connected with renowned coach Joey “Flex” Flores and worked towards competing professionally.

Jafari applied the discipline needed for bodybuilding to achieving his education dreams.

He hopes to compete at the highest levels of bodybuilding, specifically Mr. Olympia and the Arnold Classic, while acknowledging that his master’s degree is a significant backup plan.

“I have engineering in my pocket,” says Jafari.

“If I can’t make it as a bodybuilder, it would be my pleasure to work as a civil engineer, as a former international student from the University of Windsor. My message to international students, and all students, is to never give up on your dream.”
