Get moving to support Canadian veterans

Royal Canadian Navy members and students observe a moment of remembrance during a campus serviceCanadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Serving Scholars students take part in a Remembrance Day service at the University of Windsor on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.

The University of Windsor’s Serving Scholars team is rallying the campus community to get moving in support of ill and injured members and veterans of Canada’s military.

Throughout November, the team will take part in the Loaring Consistency Challenge in support of Soldier On — a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) program that helps ill and injured members and veterans recover by connecting them with opportunities in sport, recreation and the arts.

The challenge is a movement-based fundraiser inviting participants to commit to 30 minutes of activity per day in November, raising funds and awareness for military communities.

Sheri Lowrie, recruitment and outreach co-ordinator in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, is leading a campus-wide call for participants to join the Serving Scholars team.

“Thirty minutes a day is a small commitment for us, but it can make a big impact for those who have served. I hope our campus community will join us in moving with purpose in support of our military members and veterans,” she said.

The Loaring Consistency Challenge — named in honour of John W. Loaring, a 1936 Olympic silver medallist in track and field who also served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve — runs from Nov. 1 to 30 and is a virtually guided activity challenge open to all ages and abilities.

“This challenge is a meaningful way for our campus to come together, stay active, and show gratitude to those who have served. By moving with purpose throughout November, we’re not only supporting our own well-being — we’re honouring and supporting the recovery of ill and injured members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Lowrie who also helped to spearhead the Serving Scholars program at UWindsor.

Serving Scholars is a program that supports students who are also members of the CAF, ensuring they are not disadvantaged by their military commitments and offering flexibility when they are called to duty.

Participants can “earn their rank” based on the number of days they exercise, with bonus points for consistency and duration of activity.

Those interested in joining the challenge can register online and join the University of Windsor - Team Serving Scholars before Friday, Oct. 31.
