For fourth-year student Zeina Abou Haidar, the University of Windsor has been more than a place of study – it’s where she discovered her passion for research and creative inquiry.

A Communication, Media, and Film major with a minor in French Studies, Zeina says her experience in the University’s Outstanding Scholars program has shaped the way she thinks about learning, collaboration and her future.

“At the end of my first year, I got an email saying I could apply,” she said.

“When I learned it gave undergrads the chance to take part in real research with faculty, I knew that was an incredible opportunity.”

Zeina applied, was accepted and soon began what has become a defining experience of her degree. Through the Outstanding Scholars program, she has completed five paid research placements.

“Each offered a new challenge and perspective, but it never felt overwhelming,” Zeina said.

“The first few took around six hours a week, and by fourth year it’s closer to 10 or 11. The professors are flexible if you have exams or deadlines and so that helps a lot.”

Her projects have reflected her interests in communication and advertising.

“One of my professors was writing a paper on electric vehicle advertising, and I joined as a research assistant,” she explained.

“I gathered and summarized resources. When the paper was published, my name appeared in the acknowledgments and seeing that was very rewarding.

“I contributed to something real.”

As she approaches her final undergraduate semester, Zeina credits the program for shaping her academic and personal growth.

“Being part of Outstanding Scholars has prepared me for graduate studies and future work,” she said.

“It’s something that stands out on your record and truly reflects your dedication.”

Her advice to other students is simple.

“Take the chance. It’s paid experience, right on campus and it lets you discover what you’re capable of,” remarked Zeina.

“The Outstanding Scholars program has easily been one of the best parts of my time at Windsor.”
