A new chapter in community partnership and downtown revitalization began Monday as the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario (YSWO) and the University of Windsor celebrated the grand opening of the new YMCA Learning and Career Centre, in the heart of downtown Windsor.

The new facility at 300 Ouellette Ave. is the most energy-efficient and accessible in the YSWO’s portfolio. More than just a building, it represents a partnership that brings together the strength of two leading institutions to revive the heart of the city, connecting education, community and opportunity in one vibrant space.

“This new space is more than just a building – it’s a beacon of hope and opportunity,” said Andrew Lockie, CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario. “Our initiative with the University of Windsor has allowed us to create a hub for experiential learning, community connection and local impact. Here, children, youth and families can access the support they need to flourish and build brighter futures. This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to Windsor’s future.”

The YMCA Learning and Career Centre provides English language learning, community orientation, employment services and settlement guidance serving more than 300 community members each day. The modern space aims to help Windsor’s diverse and growing population develop skills, make connections and explore new possibilities.

For the University of Windsor, the partnership aligns with its ongoing commitment to deepening community ties and promoting inclusive education across the region.

“Today marks an important step forward for the University’s partnership with the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario,” said J.J. McMurtry, UWindsor president and vice-chancellor. “The Y’s new Learning and Career Centre on our downtown campus will allow our two organizations to continue working together to create more opportunities for learning, wellness and inclusive programming.”

Dr. McMurtry said the partnership between the YMCA and the University of Windsor is part of a larger story – one of renewal and connection in downtown Windsor. Together, they’re shaping a community where education, wellness and opportunity come together to empower residents and newcomers alike.

For the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, founded in 1856, the new centre extends a long legacy of service across more than 200 locations, offering programs that help people of all backgrounds learn, grow and belong.

The University of Windsor, established in 1857, continues to build on its mission of accessibility and community engagement. With over 16,000 students, its growing downtown presence reflects a shared vision for a more connected and inclusive city.

Side by side, YMCA and UWindsor are shaping a vibrant downtown where people of all backgrounds can live, learn and thrive.
