Purpose
To conduct a formative evaluation of a comprehensive workplace strategy including education & referral to cancer screening programs and healthy lifestyle support programs.
Rationale
Research indicates that “approximately 50% of all cancers can either be prevented or detected early before becoming a serious health problem”. It is estimated that 30 % of new cancer cases will occur in “working adults”, 20-59 (Canadian Cancer Society, 2009). Literature review revealed limited evidence of health promotion programs that demonstrate behaviour outcomes in addition to awareness and knowledge increase.
Methodology
This project is designed as a personalized, evidence-based health intervention and research study targeting individuals in workplaces.
Research data collection includes: a baseline risk assessment; an immediate feedback survey and 6-month and 1-year matched sample outcome surveys.
Sample & Setting
Participants were invited to participate through lunch and learn sessions &/or via e-learning modules. Windsor Regional Hospital was selected as the pilot work site; 20%, (n=608) of the workforce (staff, volunteers, retirees) participated.
Results
Immediate feedback results indicate that 88% of participants will likely act on the recommendations provided, 95% intend to follow with their primary health care provider (PHCP) and over 40% indicated they would not have received this information elsewhere. The 6 month matched sample survey highlights: 50% followed up with their PHCP, 73% of those who learned they were due for a mammogram had it completed at the 6 month mark, 65% who learned they were due for Pap Test completed and 50 % of those who learned they were due for colorectal cancer screening completed it.
Conclusion
The results do demonstrate increased cancer screening program participation in self-select participants of the pilot program.12 month survey at the pilot site and expansion nationally in diversified work settings is currently underway.
