Philosophy at the University of Windsor: Small and Friendly

The University of Windsor Philosophy Department is recognized for excellence in teaching and excellence in research. Philosophy has a variety of programs at both the undergraduate level (program listing) and graduate level (program listing). We have a small, friendly department providing ample opportunity for student-teacher interaction; the student-run philosophy club provides ample opportunity for students to interact with one another. Philosophy's visiting speakers series brings faculty, students, and the general public together with members of the broader philosophical community.

What is Philosophy?

Philosophy is creative and careful thinking about possible answers to fundamental questions, such as:

  • What makes a life worthwhile?
  • Does the universe have a meaning?
  • Can we know the nature of reality?
  • What are our moral obligations and how can we find out what they are?
  • What makes one kind of society more just than another kind?
  • Is beauty really only in the eye of the beholder or is there more to it than that?

The University of Windsor's Philosophy Department offers courses in which the answers to these and many other philosophical questions are explored and critically evaluated.

Why study Philosophy?

The main reason to study philosophy is for its own sake. Philosophy enables us to reflect on questions about who we are and how we should live. It is also worth noting that many who have studied philosophy have gone on to succeed in a variety of areas. Studying philosophy provides students with advanced reading, writing, and critical skills that open many doors.
