The goal of this program is to provide assistance to researchers who wish to improve their Tri-Council grant application which was judged by the agency to be of high quality but was not funded due to restrictions in the financial resources of the agency. Following an internal review, the number of awards will be dependent on the availability of the funds and the ranking of the applications by the Adjudicating Committee. The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI) is responsible for providing the funding. The provision of funding and continuation of this program are contingent upon availability of funds.
Maximum value: $5,000
General Eligibility and Requirements
- If you currently have funds from an existing grant or grants, an application for a TSGP award may be considered ineligible unless the need for the funding is explicitly justified in the application form.
- You may submit one TSGP application in a five-year period.
- Successful applicants who fail to comply with the terms of the award will be ineligible for future competitions.
- Neither adjunct researchers nor professors emeriti are eligible to apply.
NSERC Applicants: Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible to apply, NSERC applicants must have received an average ranking of strong in all three categories. During the internal review process, higher ratings will be weighted at a higher value. The NSERC applicant will be required to submit the following:
- A completed TSGP application form in the ERSO Research Portal which includes a budget and justification and a brief plan of how the money will be spent to address issues raised in the reviewers’ comments which includes
- A commitment to resubmit an application in the next NSERC Discovery Grant competition following the awarding of the TSGP, and to attend a relevant ORIS Information Session (included with application)
- A commitment to submit to ORIS a revised NSERC Discovery grant six weeks prior to the targeted NSERC deadline for peer review and to take advantage of reviews resulting therefrom (included with the application)
- Reviews, ratings and panel comments received by the applicant regarding the NSERC application (upload as an attachment)
SSHRC Applicants: Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible to apply, your SSHRC Insight, Insight Development, or Partnership Development application must have received a ranking of 4.0 – 4.9 (Good to Very Good) in each of the three evaluation categories.
You will be required to submit a completed TSGP application form in the ERSO Research Portal, which includes
- The scores and any reviews received from SSHRC regarding the unsuccessful application (upload as attachments).
- A budget justification that outlines how the $5,000 TSGP grant will be spent to address issues raised in the reviewers’ comments. (Note: It is possible to reserve some of the $5,000 TSGP grant as a cash contribution to supplement any cash committed by your Faculty and the OVPRI to the revised SSHRC application.)
- A commitment to revise and resubmit the application to an appropriate SSHRC program in 2025 or 2026. This may be a different SSHRC program than the one to which the application was previously unsuccessful.
