Business professor gains national recognition for mentorship

His volunteer work and leadership development in the Windsor community have earned professor Jim Marsh of the Odette School of Business recognition as one of Startup Canada’s Top 10 Mentor Rock Stars.

Business student Bradley Ouellette nominated Marsh for the Canada Mentorship Challenge hosted by Startup Canada, which enhances competitiveness and prosperity by supporting Canadian entrepreneurship.

Gaming executive to pull back curtain on casino operations

Kevin Laforet, president of Caesars Windsor, will deliver an address entitled “Beyond the glitz: Driving casino success through the service-profit chain” as the next instalment of the Odette School of Business Breakfast with Champions speaker series on Thursday, November 15.

Film festival a learning experience for business students

The Odette School of Business has taken a large role in the Windsor International Film Festival again this year with the help of professor Vincent Georgie.

This will be the fourth year he has involved students in the festival and with 100 volunteers, it will be the biggest effort yet.

“I have had students work as much as 100 hours and take time off of work because they love it so much,” said Georgie.

Alumni association to honour achievements of recent grads

Athletes, educators, entrepreneurs and entertainers are among the eight University of Windsor grads who will be honoured for their successes early in their professional careers during the University of Windsor Alumni Association’s annual general meeting on Thursday, November 15.

Panel to discuss challenges and solutions for family businesses

The challenges and solutions for family business owners in the Windsor-Essex community will be the focus of a panel discussion on Tuesday, November 13, entitled “All in the Family: A Panel on Family Business.”

The discussion, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ambassador Golf Club, is hosted by UWindsor’s Centre for Enterprise and Law.

Four successful Canadian business owners and experts will touch on starting a business with one’s spouse, succession planning, starting a family while owning a business and next-generation business challenges.

Pioneer in leadership communications to deliver breakfast seminar

Judith Humphrey, president of the corporate communications firm The Humphrey Group, will speak on campus Thursday, November 8, as the next instalment of the Odette School of Business Breakfast with Champions series.

Humphrey’s firm, which she founded in 1987, employs a team of 23 instructors who provide seminars and one-on-one coaching in leadership communications to leaders at all levels, all over the world. Her book, Speaking as a Leader: How to Lead Every Time You Speak, distils their advice and is already in its third printing.

Bowl-a-thon to support United Way

A group of business students will hold a charity bowl-a-thon in support of the Windsor-Essex United Way on Wednesday, November 14.

The event runs 9 p.m. to midnight at the Rose Bowl, 2458 Dougall Avenue. The cost to enter is $15 per person. To register, phone 519-981-7377 or 519-819-7589.

Event a chance to network with local engineers

The Centre for Enterprise and Law will host an information and networking event to educate students, faculty and staff on how to start their own businesses.

The free pizza and pop reception runs 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, in Vanier Hall’s Winclare A.
The event, entitled Evening with an Engineer, will bring two local engineers to discuss their newest patented technology and the successful starts of their own businesses.
