Essex team triumphs in high school stock exchange simulation

The opening bell rang at the 2012 Odette Stock Exchange on Friday, April 25, to over 200 excited high school students from Windsor/Essex – dressed to impress and ready to make a profit!

Savvy traders navigated the masked stocks selected from historical prices in a simulated contest with seven rounds of trading.

Odette students make big impact on local community

Whether through a canned food drive for the Downtown Mission, a fashion show for Hiatus House, or a dinner for the Well-Come Centre for Human Potential, students in the Odette School of Business’s course in Management and Organizational Life made a substantial contribution to the community, says professor Martha Reavley.

The students form teams to design and execute projects that provide the framework for the application of a broad range of business skills. This year, they raised $35,000 and donated food, clothing and other goods to benefit 26 local charities.

Chamber of Commerce recognizes business excellence

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce honoured several members of the UWindsor community Wednesday at the Ciociaro Club during its annual Business Excellence Awards presentations.

Lancer women’s basketball coach Chantal Vallée’s Athena Award and Board of Governors member Fouad Tayfour’s Believe Windsor Essex Award had been announced prior to the formal event.

Foundation offering scholarships to students in electrical fields

The Electro-Federation of Canada -- a national association representing the electrical, consumer electronics and appliance sectors – invites applications for 45 scholarships with a total value of more than $100,000.

Now in its 17th year, the program provides university and college students across Canada with support to pursue a career in the electrical and electronics industries. Since its inception, more than 300 scholarships have gone to qualified students in such areas as electrical or environmental engineering, computer science, and business.

Gala honours Lancer achievements on and off the field

Miah-Marie Langlois received the Banner Shield as the University of Windsor’s top female athlete of the year at the Evening of Excellence banquet highlighting Lancer accomplishments, Wednesday at the St. Clair Centre of the Arts.

The women’s basketball star was a multiple winner on the evening, as was her male counterpart, Matt Walters of the cross country and track teams.

Accountant training program wins national recognition

A program to qualify internationally-trained accountants to Canadian standards at the Odette School of Business has won an award from the profession’s national governing body.

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor received a CMA Canada National Recognition Award for its partnership of the University of Windsor and Certified Management Accountants of Ontario in the skills development program.

Since 2009, the program has received more than 234 applications, provided training to 70 women, and enjoyed a participant employment rate of 86 per cent.

Business students dodge balls for a cause

The charity benefiting from a student-organized dodgeball tournament got an unexpected bonus, as the winning team turned over its $500 prize for the cause.

The tournament -- Saturday, March 24, at Assumption College Catholic High School -- was the brainchild of a group in business professor Martha Reavley’s Management and Organizational Behaviour Class: Zach Braga, Tyler Jahn, Evan Rhyno, Mohamad Zein and Nowshin Nur.

“Overall it went spectacular,” said Jahn. “As we dwindled down to the finals, everyone was duking it out and in the end, Team Meadows won.”

Students reap rewards of smoking cessation contest

It may have been scorching hot Wednesday afternoon, but it was much less smoky than usual, as the Leave the Pack Behind student health services group held its awards ceremony in the Thirsty Scholar.

With about 50 student participants on hand to watch, UWindsor president Alan Wildeman handed out awards to those winners who reduced or eliminated cigarettes from their lives.
