Student council seeking new management for Thirsty Scholar pub

Saying that chronic deficits in pub operations are putting a strain on its finances, the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance plans to issue a request for proposals to take over management of the Thirsty Scholar.

The pub has accumulated a debt of over a million dollars. Those losses have been covered by a series of interest-free loans from the UWSA, says president André Capaldi: “It is starting to interfere with our other priorities.”

Campus mourns retiree death

Campus flags will be lowered Wednesday, September 28, in memory of retired languages professor Vincente Perez-Soler, who died June 4 in Valencia, Spain.

Dr. Perez -Soler joined the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department in 1966, received tenure in 1970 and retired in 1979.

Residence blood donor clinic open to public

A blood donor clinic scheduled for Vanier Hall on Wednesday, September 28, is aimed at students living in residence but open to all, says the Canadian Blood Service.

The clinic runs 5 to 8 p.m. in the Oak Room; as always, walk-in donors are welcome. The entire experience, including health assessment and recovery, takes about an hour.

Collective bargaining continues with CUPE 1393 and WUFA

Bargaining discussions continue with the University of Windsor and CUPE 1393 with the assistance of a mediator appointed by the Ministry of Labour on September 28, 29 and 30. The University remains confident that an agreement can be reached. 

University administration has learned from the Ministry of Labour that a No Board report has been issued at the request of CUPE 1393, putting them in a legal strike position at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. In the unlikely event of a strike, classes will continue and the University will remain open with a reduced number of services available.

Free barbecue a campus welcome for part-time students

The Organization of Part-time University Students welcomed its members to campus with a free welcome barbecue outside the CAW Student Centre on Tuesday.

Several hundred part-time students, staff, faculty and alumni turned out, drawn by the smell of hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers grilled by Catering Services. In addition to the free grub, members attending the eighth annual event received gifts such as OPUS t-shirts, water bottles and notebooks.
