TITLE:                          Review of Challenges in the Development of Automation for Vine-Grown Fruit Harvesting

Abstract

This review examines the use of finite element modeling (FEM), imaging techniques, and biomechanical property testing as applied to fruits for optimized robotic harvesting. Without a deeper understanding of the mechanical and structural properties of fruits, advancements in harvesting automation, especially for vine-grown fruit, are limited. Labour shortages in the agriculture industry have increased dependency on temporary foreign workers, raising concerns about working conditions and labour costs, which in term furthers the push for automation. This review explores the current challenges and need in developing harvesting automation technology. It also compares experimental testing techniques to determine mechanical properties of fruit, imaging techniques for bruise detection, and the use of the data in the generation of FEMs.
