TITLE: Numerical Modeling of Iron Particles Combustion
Abstract
Combustion of iron particles is a promising alternative clean fuel technology, utilizing the inherent properties of iron as a metal with high energy density. This method employs the highly exothermic reaction of iron with oxygen to produce heat with minimal greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Improvements in the combustion process are achievable through techniques such as aerosolization, which increases dispersion and, consequently, reactivity in the air. The abundance of iron and the ability to recycle its combustion products make it a potentially sustainable energy carrier. This presentation introduces the environmental benefits, underlying physics, including thermodynamics and chemical kinetics that govern the combustion process, and the associated challenges.
