TITLE: Effect of Boundary Conditions on Square Jet Behaviour in Open Channel Flows
Abstract
The combined effect of a bed and free surface on a square jet issuing into an open channel is studied using Large Eddy Simulation. This approach, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES), is chosen to accurately resolve the complex, large-scale coherent structures, and turbulent interactions inherent to such flows, which are often not captured by traditional two-dimensional experiments or RANS-based models. Two distinct offset ratios (defined by the jet-to-bed distance, h, to the nozzle height, d) are investigated; h/d = 2 and 4. The smaller offset ratio (h/d = 2) is selected to initiate jet-bed interaction during the transition phase of the free square jet, typically observed for offset heights in the range 1.2 < h/d < 2.6. The larger offset ratio (h/d = 4) allows for the study of the confinements’ influence of a fully turbulent, self-preserving jet.
This presentation summarizes the available literature available on offset jets and introduces the need for the present study
