Working at Heights

Working at Heights Program :

Working at height means any work where a fall hazard exists if precautions are not taken, a person could fall a distance (3 meters/10 feet) cause personal injury.

Examples at the University include:

  • Falling from a ladder
  • Though an unguarded hole
  • Working off elevated work platforms
  • Aerial devices
  • Fixed suspended platforms
  • Working within 6 feet from the edge of a roof

Anyone working or performing activities at height (including ladders) must adhere to the University’s Working at Heights Program OHS-4.6.22. 

This program includes reference documents and checklists for those using ladders, aerial work platforms or other work where a fall from height hazard exists.

Training and PPE requirements:

  • All individual working at heights must be trained prior to conducting the work.  Contact your supervisor or Health and Safety Office to organize this training. 
  • Pre-use inspection of any equipment to be used prior to working from heights must be documented.

Records:

All records must be maintained by the department.  Health and safety office maintains the working at heights training records.
