Call for Papers for the Annual 2026 Meeting of the

Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies (CAANS) /

Association canadienne pour l’avancement des études néerlandaises (ACAEN)

11 –  12 June, 2026

The 2026 annual conference of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies will take place at the University of Windsor (Windsor, Ontario). The University of Windsor is situated in southwestern Ontario, a region which was a centre of Flemish and Dutch immigration from the early 20th century until the end of the 1960s. The University of Windsor and members of southwestern Ontario’s Dutch-speaking community have played an active role in the activities of CAANS, since the association’s founding in the 1970s. This year’s conference on the campus of the University of Windsor also aims to celebrate the lasting contributions of Windsor’s local CAANS chapter to the promotion of Dutch language and culture in Canada.

We invite proposals in English, French, or Dutch for research presentations or roundtable discussions for CAANS/ACAÉN 2026. The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies is the academic ‘home’ of scholars, from a myriad of disciplines, whose research focuses on some aspect of Netherlandic Studies, be it linguistic, literary, historical, political, or art historical. We invite proposals engaging diverse topics related to the contributions of the Netherlandic world in a broad sense, including but not limited to language, literature, culture, history, art and art history, or politics. For CAANS/ACAÉN 2026, we especially invite scholars to reflect on the place of the Netherlandic world, and of its language, literature, and culture, in today’s quickly changing global landscape.

Presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion and may be delivered in English, French, or Dutch. Papers may be delivered in person or remotely. The online format will be live presentation with live Q&A. Instructions regarding remote delivery will be shared with the presenter upon acceptance of their proposal.

We also welcome proposals for roundtable discussions (3 to 4 presenters) on a topic of major interest. Roundtable discussions will be 1 hour including Q&A. Participation may be in person or online.

CAANS 2026 will feature Belgian political scientist Kris Deschouwer (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) as this year’s keynote speaker. Kris Deschouwer’s research focuses on Belgian politics, the Flemish question, regionalism, federalism and consociational democracy.
